Background of the Study

Just-in-time (JIT) is an inventory management strategy that aims to minimize inventory levels and reduce waste by producing goods only when they are needed in the production process. The JIT approach focuses on reducing the lead time between the order and the production of goods, thus optimizing the efficiency of manufacturing operations. By adopting JIT practices, companies can improve cash flow, reduce storage costs, and increase overall production efficiency.

Unilever Nigeria, a major player in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry, has implemented JIT practices in its manufacturing operations to improve efficiency and reduce waste. In Taraba State, where the company operates production facilities, Unilever has integrated JIT into its supply chain to ensure that raw materials are available when needed, without overstocking or incurring unnecessary storage costs. The company has also focused on streamlining production processes to reduce delays and enhance overall operational efficiency.

This study aims to explore the impact of JIT practices on manufacturing efficiency at Unilever Nigeria in Taraba State. It will examine how JIT has improved production processes, reduced costs, and enhanced operational performance.

Statement of the Problem

While JIT practices have been widely adopted in manufacturing industries worldwide, the effectiveness of this strategy in enhancing manufacturing efficiency remains variable depending on industry context and regional factors. At Unilever Nigeria, the integration of JIT in the production process may have led to improvements in operational efficiency, but there is limited research on the specific impact of JIT on manufacturing performance in the company’s Taraba State facilities. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of JIT practices at Unilever Nigeria in improving manufacturing efficiency.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of JIT practices on manufacturing efficiency at Unilever Nigeria in Taraba State.

  2. To examine how JIT practices have affected production costs, lead times, and overall operational performance at Unilever Nigeria.

  3. To explore the challenges and benefits of implementing JIT practices in Unilever Nigeria’s manufacturing operations.

Research Questions

  1. How do JIT practices impact manufacturing efficiency at Unilever Nigeria in Taraba State?

  2. How have JIT practices influenced production costs, lead times, and operational performance at Unilever Nigeria?

  3. What are the challenges and benefits of implementing JIT practices in Unilever Nigeria’s manufacturing operations?

Research Hypotheses

  1. JIT practices significantly improve manufacturing efficiency at Unilever Nigeria in Taraba State.

  2. JIT practices reduce production costs and lead times, contributing to improved operational performance at Unilever Nigeria.

  3. The implementation of JIT practices in Unilever Nigeria’s manufacturing operations results in measurable benefits such as cost reduction and faster production cycles.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on assessing the impact of JIT practices on manufacturing efficiency at Unilever Nigeria’s Taraba State facilities. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews, and production records analysis. Limitations may include challenges in accessing proprietary operational data and external factors such as market demand that could influence production efficiency.

Definitions of Terms

  • Just-in-Time (JIT): An inventory and production strategy that aims to reduce waste by producing and delivering goods only as they are needed in the production process.

  • Manufacturing Efficiency: The ability of a manufacturing operation to produce goods at the lowest possible cost and with the least amount of time and resources.

  • Production Lead Time: The amount of time required to produce a product from the moment the raw materials are obtained to the moment the product is completed and ready for delivery.
